Rural Housing

Housing, and, in particular, the provision of suitable housing for low income households, is one of the crucial issues facing rural communities today. The lack of affordable housing in rural areas threatens the future of villages and rural communities, with negative social and economic implications for them in the long term. Affordable housing is a critical issue for the majority of rural communities today.

Rural Communities

With the dramatic rise in house prices and increase in demand for second homes, over the last few years, people on modest incomes and first time buyers have found themselves priced out of the market in rural areas. These are the people who often work in key service areas, or contribute greatly towards the local community.

We have also seen an increase in the closure of village schools, post offices and shops. These are businesses and services which are seen as vital to maintaining a sustainable community.

All of this means that many people are being forced to move out of rural areas, away from communities in which they have lived and contributed. Draining areas of skilled individuals, eroding local communities and increasing a sense of social exclusion for these individuals.

The Rural Housing Enabler

The role of the Rural Housing Enabler is to work with rural communities providing independent advice and support, acting as a facilitator and helping them through the complicated process of providing affordable housing. The Rural Housing Enabler works with Community Councils, local landowners, Planning Officers, National Parks, Housing Associations and other relevant individuals and organisations, helping to find practical solutions, to meet the housing needs of rural communities throughout Pembrokeshire.
